October 16, 2005 17:03 - Toy Recalls on "Sesame Street" Toy Sunglasses and Sparkle Horse Toys; Warning on Toxin-laden Baby Toys
Recalls have been announced on two children products: "Sesame Street" Toy Sunglasses made by American Greeting Corps, and Sparkle Horse Toys made by Douglas Company. If your child's toy box contains these items, you can return them for a refund. Always make sure that your child's toys are safe. For more information on how to determine your child's toy safety, see our child toy safety section.
Another warning on children-related product came from US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) whose report announced that many common baby products, such as teethers, bath books and sleep accessories, contain toxic chemicals. The toxic chemicals found include phthalates and PBDEs, both of which have been linked to a host of health problems.
Wow, that's prety scary to me.
But is this warning justified and do I need to start switching our plastic baby toys to the wooden kinds ? Apparently not, according to the American Chemical Council which represents these businesses. Their news release stated that the level of the toxin in each product is below the federal safety level and that customers should not worry about the presence of low amount of toxin. Furthermore, detection of low amount of toxin does not necessarily equate to harm since that level of phtalates have been used for a long time without any effect
However, I, as a mother, still concern about the fact that these toxins are present in a lot of baby products. Although the American Chemical Council stated that the level is very low, I am worried about repeated exposure to these products and would like this issue addressed properly.

October 21, 2005 16:00 - Beware of The Toy Caps
If your child owns a toy cap guns, it's time to let him know that the ring caps from the gun can suddenly catch fire. One ring cap ignited when a boy held it with his fingers whereas another ring cap ignited while placed in a pocket.
Just in case you're not sure what ring caps are .... Ring caps are used in toy cap guns to create a loud banging sound. The caps contain a pyrotechnic powder, sealed inside the spokes of a plastic ring. Each ring is approximately one inch in diameter.
