Baby push toys are wonderful toys to have to help your baby learning how to stand and walk. In this article, I'm going to help you to encourage your baby to stand and learn to walk using a push along toy. I'm also going to assist you in choosing the right push toy for this purpose.

Using Push Toys To Help Baby To Walk

The followings are tips on how to use a baby push toy to boost your baby's motor skills:

  • Use the push along toys to encourage your baby to stand. This activity can be done if your baby is not yet walking independently but showing the desire to walk, usually around 10-12 months of age. At this stage, we recommend you to use a ride on toy with a handle at the back since the back handle is definitely low enough for your baby to reach. Start by putting your baby's hand at the handle and encourage your baby to stand up. Practice this daily. Once you think your baby is stable, hold your baby's hand and encourage him to make a step.

  • Use the push along toys to encourage your baby to walk. After doing several practice of standing with the help of a baby walker push toy, your baby may try to walk for several steps. At this stage, you can accelerate the process by which your baby learns to walk by introducing your baby to a proper push toy according to his height. If you keep on encouraging your baby to use his push toy, this toy will soon provide plenty of 'walking' practice for him so that he can later on walk independently and become a toddler. This toy is also good to boost your child's confidence too ("Hey mom ... see .... I can walk by myself !!")

Choosing Baby Push Toys and My Recommendation

If your baby is learning to stand or walk step by step, I recommend you to buy a walker wagon with a stable base.

Why ?

Because this kind of push toys are sturdy and stable so if the child decides to climb on it or try to stand up (from sitting down), it won't tip over.

Alternatively, you may want to get a ride-on toy with handle at the back. The back handle of the ride on toys are usually low enough for a baby around 1 year old to reach. Also, since the handle is low and the toy itself is generally a bit heavier than the usual toddler push toy, this toy can be a good toy for your baby to push first time around. However, I also found that the ride on toys are generally still lighter than the proper walker wagon.

So, a baby walker wagon is what I prefer for a baby who is learning to stand and walk. and it can be found easily at any toy shop. Just remember to find a baby push toy which is stable to prevent accident.

There are three good quality stable walker wagons that I recommend to help your baby to learn to walk:

First, is Haba Walker Wagon by HABA from Germany. This walker is so well-made, very stable and is even better than the famous Radio Flyer baby wagon (also recommended, see the point below). Since it is heavy, make sure you help your baby to steer it when it's stuck to the wall. There has been no complaint on this product, and customers report that although heavy, it is actually easy to manouvre and won't left paint mark even after being banged to the wall.

Second, is the Radio Flyer Classic Walker Wagon . It's sturdy, heavy and has wheel resistant mechanism, so it won't tip over if your baby tries to reach it. However, since it's heavy, you may have to help your baby to manouvre it, especially when it's stuck to the wall. The only possible drawback is that there has been a small number of customers complaining that there are small pieces which break off and can cause choking in small children.

If you don't like the weight of the two baby push toys I mentioned earlier, you may want to get a Pushing Car instead. It's not as heavy as the other two, yet it's still sturdy. You would need to put something on the 'car' to weigh it down, at least until your baby doesn't need the push toy to help him to stand. Once your baby can walk reasonably well, you can take the weight off, and it becomes a lighter push toys which is easy to manouvre and will delight your toddler, as he roams around the room carrying his favorite toys in the car.

If you have a toddler who is already walking, and need a light push along toy for more practice and fun, go to our push along toy page to learn more on what push along toy you can buy for him.

Happy shopping.
