Cardboard Building Blocks Buying Guide

Cardboard building blocks are toy building blocks made from corrugated cardboards. What sets these blocks apart from other kind of toy blocks are the fact that these blocks are large and therefore are best for making giant structures. Hence, your kids, especially toddlers, can actually play 'within' the structure that they built using these giant blocks. You will find that your children love them. Indeed, cardboard blocks are good toys to buy to enhance your child's imagination and to support your child's pretend play.

In this article, you will find information on things you should consider before buying these giant cardboard blocks, the types of jumbo blocks available, and where to buy such blocks.

Large Cardboard Block Buying Caveat

Before buying these big blocks, there are several things you should be aware of:

  • First, they usually come unassembled. Many people don't realize this and get dissappointed when the bricks come unassembled. You do have to assemble them properly, otherwise they won't be stable (talking about crooked corners here). If you want giant toy building blocks which you don't have to assemble, you may want to try the foam building blocks instead.

  • Second, although they are sturdy and durable, they are chewable.

  • Third, they take a lot of space to store. You will need to dedicate a generous amount of space in your closet to store these.

  • Fourth, they are expensive. To tell you the truth, you will need more than one set of these cardboard building blocks for your children to make a decent structure. If you are diligent enough, you can make jumbo cardboard blocks yourself by saving shoe boxes or you can simply ask the shoe stores whether they have some shoe boxes to spare. Then you can put something inside the boxes to make them a bit heavier (for stability), then wrap them in various wrapping paper. And voila ... you get your homemade giant cardboard blocks.

Types of Giant Cardboard Building Blocks

Nowadays, there are a few companies making this kind of blocks. However, the most famous cardboard building block is made by Imagiplay, presumably because this company is the first one to produce such block. It's not therefore suprising that these giant blocks are often called Imagiblocks, Imagibricks or Imagiplay cardboard blocks. The original design for these blocks resembles bricks so they are also often called cardboard brick blocks.

There are 3 different sizes of these cardboard brick blocks; each of which has a distinct color. The smallest one is blue, the medium is yellow and the biggest one is red.

I find that the red cardboard brick blocks are the best, just because they are the biggest and hence the most stable ones. When you first buying these, I recommend you to get the mixed set first unless you know which pieces your children like best. Then you can always buy more sets of the one that your children like best.

Apart from brick structures, nowadays, you can also buy cardboard building blocks which have different kind of shapes, hence your child can make a city or a castle out of them. These toy blocks are also called architectural cardboard building blocks. However, some of the pieces of castle cardboard block set are just too small and too light. Therefore, I don't recommend these because of the possible stability problem.

I think that if you have more than one children who love building, then cardboard block will be a good buy since they support open-ended play, durable and grow with your child.

Where to buy

Finding a place to buy cardboard brick blocks offline can be tricky. Since these large cardboard blocks are ones of the staple toys in day cares and preschools you may be able to buy these from the local day care suppliers. However, if you are willing to buy these online, there are ample of online stores which carry them.

I personally recommend you to shop at Kazoo Toys. The toys they carry are unique, wholesome, safe and of good quality. None of the toys sold in this store is involved in the recent massive toy recalls. The good selection of the toys they carry is also appreciated by both Plaything magazine and the Toy Industry Association which mention Kazoo Toys as the top toy site and the Toy Store of the Year.

Back to building blocks. This store carries a variety of building and construction toys including mixed set of cardboard blocks as well as the red cardboard building blocks .

Therefore, don't hesitate to browse around and purchase something from this store.

If you want more choice on building blocks, you may be able to get those from toy shops which specialize on either building blocks or construction toys. However, for competitive price and possibly the lowest price, I recommend you to buy at Kazoo Toys.
