Pull along toys -are they really necessary ?

Your toddler will eventually perfect his walking technique with or without a pull along toy. However, pull along toys, with the amusement they can give, will encourage your toddler to walk more and hence help your toddler to perfect the walking more quickly. This is because pulling a toddler pull toy requires your toddler to walk and maintain balance at the same time.

When will a toddler be able to use toddler pull toys ?

Before your toddler can manage to use a pull along toy, s/he should be able to walk and do something else at the same time which indicate that your toddler has got a good balance. So, 2-3 months after your toddler starts walking is probably a good time to give him/her a pull along toy.

How to choose a pull toy ?

There are basically three types of toddler pull toys.

The first and most common type is a pull along toy consisting of cute objects (animals, or others) with the wheels. This pull toy can be pulled using a string. When this toy is pulled, it will create noise and movement, for instance the animal's neck will move up and down, or the animal hands will clap. This kind of pull along toy is good since it's noisy and active. Your toddler will love to pull and listen to all the noises the toy causes. However, don't forget to check on the sturdiness since a light (and cheap) pull toy will tumble easily on a carpet, hence frustrating the toddler. Also, make sure that the toddler pull toy has a large base for stability. There are two type of toddler pull toys which fall into this category: wooden pull toys and plastic pull toys.

The second type of toddler pull toys is the one which not only serve as a pull along toy, but can also be used for something else. For instance, you may find the one which has a wooden container with toy building blocks in it. Of course this type of toy is less appealing than the proper pull along toy which has cute objects , but this toy will serve more than just a pull toy (and hence is more economical). Opportunities to loading and unloading, coupled with building activity provides a toddler wth double amusement.

If you dread to have a long string around your toddler, don't worry. There's the third type of toddler pull toy which do no need a string to pull. Some pull toys have plastic handle connected to a plastic object with a wheel . They're also usually pretty light since your toddler will have to drag them. Again, the plastic object may have beans or others to make it noisy when dragged. The all time famous corn popper pull toy falls into this category.

So, which pull along toys are the best ?

I think it depends on your budget and your (and your toddler's) preference. Each of them has pros and cons which I've outlined. So, I would have to say: the choice is yours ............
