Toy Chests -- To Buy or Not To Buy
Toy chests are one of the most popular system in storing toys.
But, is this the right toy storage system for you ? Let's first see the advantage and disadvantage of using a child toy box as your toy storage solution. The advantage The main advantage of using a toy box is very obvious. It's very good for quick cleaning. If you are busy, you can just toss the toys inside the chest without having to arrange them -- and voila, like magic, all the mess are gone. In addition, your child can easily take the toys out of the toy chest and then put them back in themselves. The drawback - If the toys in the toy boxes are not organized properly, there is a danger that fragile toys are crushed and broken. One way to circumvent this problem is by using smaller toy bins or containers inside a child toy box. Try not to have more than two stacks of container since the container located at the very bottom may never be opened again.
- A child toy box can easily hide toys which are located at the bottom of the pile. I find that child toys located at the bottom of the pile are just simply forgoten. So it feels like your child's toys are lost there.
- Have a potential of creating a mess -- your child may have to remove all of the toys at the top of the pile while trying to retrieve toys located at the bottom of the chest, hence creating a mess.
Choosing a child toy chestConsider these followings before buying a chest for your child toy storage: - Safety issues surrounding the use of the toy boxes
- Practical vs decorative.
Toy boxes are usually part of a child's room decor. Therefore they are often designed with decorative purpose in mind. However, for those with a 'creative mind', there are plain wooden toy chests out there so you can buy this kind of chests and decorate it yourself. Some manufacturers also like to put all sort of bells and whistles. Therefore you may find that there are toy chests which have bookshelf or the ones which can be converted into a bench. These kinds of chests are quite pricey. If you want to own a child toy chest for practical reason, then you can obtain the basic one for a much cheaper price. - Wood vs plastic. Toy chests are are usually made either from wood or plastic. The plastic ones are usually cheaper than the wooden one. But wooden toy chests are sturdier and last longer. They can even be passed from generation to generation.
Using a toy chestNow, which toy can be stored in a chest and which toy should never get into a chest ? A chest can be used to store toys which are big and not fragile. These include toys like: - child balls.
- stuffed toys (dolls or animals).
- trucks, big airplane, big ships, big cars.
This storage system is definitely not suitable for storing itsy bitsy toys or toys with small pieces. Remember that even if you put small containers in the chest to organize those small pieces, there is always a danger that these containers can accidently open, spilling all those small pieces inside the chest. That, to me, is a cleaning-up nightmare. In addition, fragile toys like Barbie dolls should never visit a toy chest.
