Are toy bins for you ?
To answer this question, let's see the advantages and disadvantages of using toy storage bins to organize toys.
The main advantage of having a toy bin organizer is that it sorts your child's toys into compartments. As a result, the toys are more neatly organized. Other advantages include:
- If the toy bins do not have lids, then it it easy to see the content of the bins. This makes the clean-up easy.
- As opposed to the toy chest system , the content of the toy storage bins are easily reached and removed during play time. There is no need to dig and remove half of the toys just to look for one particular toys. This translates to less mess.
However, there are precautions you should take when using a toy bin organizer:
- It is possible for your child to climb on the shelf of a toy storage bin. Make sure that your child understands that he should not climb the shelf and make sure that the shelf is sturdy.
- It is recommended to use a toy bin organizer which has similar height to your child. This way, your child can reach the highest plastic toy bins easily so it prevents him from climbing the shelf.
What kind of toys is this system suitable for ?
This system is suitable for a child which has a lot of small toys, such as: little cars, bean bag toys, little action figures, and art supply. It is not suitable for big toys.
Buying toy storage bins
Nowadays, toy bin organizer comes in variety of color and sizes. Some comprise of just 4 medium-sized plastic toy bins. However, the most popular model has 12 toy bins with different sizes. There are quite a variety in colors too. You will sure find toy bins with your child's preferred colors.
However, it is a bit harder to find toy storage bins compared to toy chests locally. For more variety, I suggest you to check online stores.
Basically, there are two types of toy storage bins :
- Toy bins (no lid) with tilted/angled shelf . This is the most popular kind of toy bin system. The advantage of this kind of toy bin organizer is that it displays the content of each bins right on your face since the bins do not have lids and they are tilted. Your children will also be able to take the content out easily without even lifting the bins out of the shelf. However, if your children wanted to take the bins out, be aware that the young ones may find it difficult to manipulate the bins to take them out and put them back in.
Here are the links of recommended toy bin organizers:
- 12-toy bin organizer. I recommend Tot Tutors Deluxe Wood Organizer
because this organizer is well-made and stable. The toy bins are also of high quality and you will get 12 primary-colored bins of different sizes.
- 4-toy bin organizer. As the name implies, this bin organizer contains 4 bins and is at the right height for toddler or young preschoolers. You can get this organizer here.
- Toy bins with flat (non-tilted) shelf. If you like this kind of organizer, you don't have to buy a commercially-made toy bin organizer. You can use any bookshelf or bookcase and put a variety of plastic containers on it. This way, you can use the higher shelves for books and the lower ones for the bins. However, unless the distance between shelves is big enough, your child may have to take a particular bin out in order to take out items from it. With a young child, this can potentially create a mess if the bin is not lidded and falls down. Therefore, I recommend to get the see-through bins with lids and/or to get a shelf which has wide space between the shelves.
Here is what I recommend if you want to don't want to piece together your own toy storage bin organizer:
- Nine Bin Toy Organizer by Little Colorado

by Little Colorado. This organizer consists of nine see-through bins with lids which sit on wooden non-tilted shelves. As long as a child can open the bin's lid, this toy organizer is very easy to use. Unlike the angled toy organizer, a young child will be able to pull the bins out and put them back in easily. Besides, this organizer can convert easily into art supplies or other small item storage when your child grows up and be placed in other rooms without looking too childish. Little Colorado makes quality wooden items, so I really recommend this.
If you don't like this model, they have other models which has eight toy bins. In this model, they leave the top rack empty so that you can easily put books or bigger toys such as stuffed animals, big truck and so forth there. You can have a look at it here
.They also have the ones with built-in bookcase which can be seen here
