Wooden Cube Puzzle

Shopping Guide and Recommendation for the Best Cube Jigsaw Puzzles

Wooden cube puzzle is actually a cube jigsaw puzzle. It's like a jigsaw puzzle, but the puzzle pieces are made of several wooden cubes instead of several flat wooden pieces. Thus your child's task is to make a complete picture using different cubes.

Since a cube has 6 sides, then one set of wood cube puzzle will provide 6 different puzzle pictures to assemble. Therefore, buying one set of a wooden cube puzzle is like buying 6 different jigsaw puzzles.

The level of difficulty of a picture cube puzzle depends on how many cubes required to make a picture and how obvious each piece is for assembling a picture.

To get the maximum benefits of a wooden cube puzzle, the puzzle should be age-appropriate. It should not be too easy, but also not too difficult for your children to complete.

So what is the best cube wooden puzzle for different age groups ?

Toddler Wood Cube Puzzles.

Once your toddler can master to put together 2-piece jigsaw puzzles or to assemble bear dressed up puzzles (3-piece), she's ready for the simplest of wood cube puzzles.

I find that simple two-piece wooden cube puzzles are good for 2 year old toddlers to provide more challenge, because with these toys, your toddler have to decide out of 6 possibilities (one picture per cube side) which pieces go together.

Melissa and Doug makes self-correcting 2-piece picture cube puzzles - when your toddler gets it correct, she will be rewarded with sound. For instance, when the child matches the correct animal cube, he or she will hear the animal sound for instance : a moo moo or a woof woof. Similarly, when a child matches the correct vehicle cubes, then the vehicle sound will be heard. This toddler wooden puzzle is available here.

Preschool Cube Jigsaw Puzzles.

As your child gets older, he or she will be able to handle more pieces. However, it is important to bear in mind that although your child is able to handle conventional 4-pieces jigsaw puzzles, it does not mean that he or she is ready for the same number of wooden cube puzzle pieces because there are six different pictures available in one cube that he or she may confuse the pieces.

To minimize frustration, my suggestion is, when you start your child with picture cube puzzles, help your child to determine which side belongs to a particular picture she wants to complete. Once it is done, it should not be difficult to complete the picture. As your child grows familiar with the puzzle, she will be able to determine which side belongs to a particular picture by herself.

Below is where you can buy a variety of wooden cube puzzles:

  • 4-piece cube jigsaw puzzles by Atelier Fischer (price range $14-20) are available here.
  • 6-piece and 12-piece cube wooden puzzles by Ravensburger (price range $7-10) are available here
  • 16-piece picture cube puzzle by Melissa and Doug (price range $10-12) are available here.

Other Ways to Play with Wood Cube Puzzles.

Apart from being used as a puzzle, wood cube puzzles can be used for purposes other than for assembling a picture. When not used as a puzzle, these cubes are good enough for stacking and building activities. My children often use these blocks together with their architectural wooden blocks to build a structure. You can also get your children to stack the wooden cubes and then use that as a bowling target.

Therefore, I think that wood cube puzzle is definitely a good value for money.
